This post shall be about a manga I keep going on about, called Yankee-kun to Megane-chan. It's really addictive right from the start and is taking One Piece's place as my favourite manga/anime. But I'm not sure whether it has an anime or not. Probably not going to watch it if there is, though, for fear that it'll spoil my whole impression of the manga.
Yankee refers to delinquent, and megane refers to spectacles. So the title is translated as "the delinquent guy and the spectacles girl". It's about this goody class rep with spectacles who keeps following this delinquent around, and causing him to change into a less delinquent and more friendly kind of person. That's not really the whole thing, though, there's just the start. It's quite a complicated story and sometimes it gets plotless but mindless entertainment. Oh, and it's revealed very early that the goody class rep with spectacles was a famous ex-delinquent as well. So I shall talk about the characters, which captivated me up till the latest chapter.
Shinagawa Daichi
He's the main character, the delinquent who became more enthusiastic about school and stuff. He has a rather shocking backstory which is revealed quite late in the manga. A very lovable character. At first, he's simply funny in a rude and "have personality" kind of way. Then more sides to him show and soon he begins to make me feel that he's retarded in his own ways. His character development is great. It's not that noticeable until you go back and read the first few chapters again. Kind of like the "unwilling hero" kind of character. Well-drawn also. I think the greatest thing about him is that he feels like a real person and you'll want to follow him till the end.
Adachi Hana
She's the second main character, initially introduced as a crazily dedicated class rep. But very soon it is revealed that she was a highly-feared ddelinquent who wants to be a class rep in order to be needed. She doesn't need glasses and she look super good without specs and braids, but she put them on because it apparently makes her look smart. An almost brainless yet amazingly dedicated person. Her past is filled with mystery and her idiocy keeps the manga funny.
Chiba Seiya
A sensitive and non-delinquent person. He looks scary and tall but he has a gentle and easily-scared heart. He's a clever and level-headed person. He is normal, but the way that he is normal just feels real enough for you to want to keep following this character as well.
Himeji Rinka
Calling herself the "bloody pantheress" (and nobody else calls her that), she is a loyal follower of Adachi. Not much of her is shown, but that she likes doing things like cleaning up. She is physically weak but mentally strong, and sometimes can get nosy. Actually, she's quite useless in the manga as in she does not contribute much to the plot and stuff, but at the same time, it's interesting to watch her from time to time when there are moments dedicated to her, such as a few chapters dedicated to her crush on Shinagawa. Her backstory is shown quite late, but not in much detail :/
Izumi Gaku
He was also a delinquent, but decided to be a model student so that he can be good at both studies and fighting. Obsessed with being the best, he is extremely competitive and is like a rival to Shinagawa. He occasionally pairs up with Himeji to do stuff as well. He himself doesn't interest me that much, but he kinds of bring the energy up and keeps it consistently interesting. His very expected backstory is revealed quite early - circling around his identity as a super strong and so-called legendary delinquent. I don't like this character that much, but I have to admit that he is an important element of the manga.
Yeah, so this manga is drawn by Miki Yoshikawa. She has another manga called Yamada and the Seven Witches, which is new, I think. Intending to read it :)
