Dwight, Jim & Pam, and Michael
So recently I've been watching "The Office", the US one, and I shall just talk about it here since it's got me hooked. I'm currently at season 4, and it's great.
So this is a mockumentary about an office with lots of weirdos in it. One of the biggest weirdos of all is the boss, Michael Scott. So every episode is suppose to be a record of something, like 'diversity day', 'fire', or something. There isn't really much of a goal in the show; It's more of a slice of life kind of thing, though there are people we can root for to get together and those kind of things.
What I really liked about The Office is its characters. At first, Michael Scott (the boss) and Dwight Schrute (some guy) are pretty annoying and I was secretly wishing that on an episode where Michael had to fire someone, he would fire Dwight because he was so annoying. But then when I continued watching, I just felt so attached to them as well.
Dwight (the one on the extreme left of the picture above) is a mean guy who behaves as if the world owes him a favour. He's childish, unlikeable (as a person), and plain annoying. The funny thing is, this annoying guy is delusional and thinks of himself as some high-ranking person in the office. He is extremely gullible, and is clearly a joke.
Jim Halpert (the guy at the center photo) loves to play pranks, especially on Dwight. At the beginning, he is deeply in love with Pam (the girl in the same photo), but she was engaged with this other guy. It's cute to see them together because they clearly love each other but there are just so many things blocking their paths of love. And they both play pranks on Dwight.
Then there's Michael, the boss, who's annoying, self-centered, insensitive, insulting, ignorant, stupid, stubborn, egoistic, plus a lot more negative traits. But he is freaking loyal to the company, really loves his workers and treats the whole thing like a family. Sometimes he's so annoying and awkward, but sometimes he just makes us go "awwww".
So initially, these are the characters the show revolve around (season 1), but from season 2 on, it starts showing off the other office members, who all have their perks. They are all pretty funny and the dynamics between the characters are so interesting. There are secret love relationships, one-sided overly-attached girlfriend relationships, a lot of irritants, a lot of hatred, and lots of minor office drama that can't be taken seriously.
Like some other good shows that I like, The Office was able to make me feel happy and sad at the same time, literally. There was this climatic moment in Pam and Jim's love story and it was so sad. But of course, Dwight had to say something stupid immediately in that sad scene. I like the many moments and feels this show gives. Sometimes it felt so annoying, and I hoped that someone would punch Michael in the face. Sometimes it felt sweet, sometimes warm, and sometimes it was just relaxing to see things happen.
Generally, it's fun to watch it episode after episode. We get to see how Michael fails miserably in his life, how Jim and Pam cope with their mutual crush, how this overly-attached girl goes all weird on this guy, and stuff. I ended up loving most of the characters and wanting to see what else happen in their lives. It's great.
